Police Disown Leaked WhatsApp Message on Anti-Government Protests

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has refuted claims of the Nigeria Police Force’s involvement in a leaked WhatsApp message concerning the upcoming nationwide protests. The message, which has circulated widely on social media, appears to discourage protests in Lagos State and suggests alternative locations for demonstrations.

However, in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Sunday night, the police clarified that the message did not originate from their department. According to Adejobi, the message “does not essentially represent the ideals or views of the Nigeria Police Force.”

The police have urged the public to disregard the message and similar content, emphasizing that all official communications from the Nigeria Police Force are made through their official channels. The force has encouraged Nigerians to engage in peaceful and constructive activities that contribute to the country’s progress and unity.

Furthermore, the IGP warned against the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, labeling these actions as criminal under the Cybercrime law. This warning comes as a planned nationwide protest is set to take place from August 1st to 10th, with Nigerians, particularly the youth, seeking to draw the government’s attention to the prevailing economic hardships in the country.
