Paul Merson objects to new Cole Palmer deal, says Chelsea don’t know what they’re doing
Arsenal Football Cub legend Paul Merson has objected to the new two-year contract handed to Cole Palmer by English Premier League (EPL) club, Chelsea FC.
After a stellar 2023/24 season in which Palmer scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 appearances, the Stamford Bridge landlords handed the player a two-year contract extension.
Merson in an interview with Sky Sports frowned at the move by Chelsea FC to extend the contract of the 22-year-old winger which will see the player tied to the club for no fewer than nine years.
However, Merson acknowledged the talent of the player but he argued that this season, for every team Chelsea faces, the first thing in the team talk of the opposing side will be ‘stop Cole Palmer playing’.
He said; “They don’t know what they’re doing! I’m not being horrible but you’re talking about nine years’ time! How can you tell how he’s going to be in nine years’ time?”
“He’s had an unbelievable season and he is a good player, but this season every team they face, the first thing in the team talk will be ‘stop Cole Palmer playing’ – that’s the thing now, he’s got that the whole time now.
‘‘And now you’re giving him a nine-year contract? Don’t get me wrong, I like him. But they’re giving these players seven, eight, nine-year contracts…” Merson added.
