NLC Threatens Nationwide Shutdown if Ajaero is Arrested

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong directive to its affiliate members and workers across the country, warning that it will immediately shut down the economy if the Nigerian Police arrest its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

The directive follows an invitation by the Police to Ajaero for questioning over alleged involvement in terrorism financing, among other charges. The invitation, which was extended to Ajaero on Tuesday, requested his presence at the Police headquarters by 10 am on Wednesday.

In response, the NLC convened an emergency National Executive Council meeting, where it resolved to seek an extension of time to consult with its lawyers. The meeting also resolved to reject the legitimacy of the charges against the Congress leadership, describing the invitation as an “invitation to all workers”.

Addressing workers at the Labour House, NLC Deputy President Kabiru Ado Sani stated that the Congress would not hesitate to take drastic action if Ajaero is arrested or detained. “We will put our affiliates on red alert to mobilize our membership across the country. All workers in this country should down tools and shut down the economy,” he warned.

Sani emphasized the NLC’s commitment to the rule of law and due process, while rejecting the Police’s allegations as baseless. He urged workers to remain calm and await further directives from the leadership, assuring them that the NLC would communicate any developments promptly.
