NLC President Ajaero to Face Police Interrogation on September 25

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, is set to face police interrogation on September 25, following a postponement of the scheduled questioning earlier this week.

Ajaero and NLC Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, were invited by the police for further questioning on Thursday, September 5, but failed to appear at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja. According to sources, the NLC leaders had written to the investigators, requesting a postponement of the interrogation due to an engagement outside Abuja.

“We wrote for another date as Comrade Joe Ajaero has an engagement outside Abuja today,” said Femi Falana (SAN), Ajaero’s counsel.

The police investigation revolves around allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony against Ajaero. The probe follows a night raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja, with the police alleging a link between Ajaero and a British national, Andrew Wynne, accused of financing the recent #EndBadGovernance protest.

The police had invited Ajaero and Ugboaja for questioning on August 29, and later extended the invitation for further interrogation on September 5. However, the NLC leaders’ non-appearance has raised questions about the next steps in the investigation.

“We are aware they have written those handling their case that they wouldn’t be coming today. They asked them to expect them on September 25,” said a source familiar with the situation.

Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, promised to provide an update but had yet to do so at the time of filing this report.
