NiMet: Nigeria to Experience Widespread Thunderstorms This Weekend

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert predicting thunderstorms and cloudy skies across Nigeria from Thursday to Saturday. According to NiMet’s weather outlook released in Abuja, varying intensities of thunderstorms and rainfall are expected across different regions.

On Thursday, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Kebbi State during the morning hours, spreading to Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara later in the day.

In the North Central region, thunderstorms are anticipated over Niger and Kwara states in the morning, with the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, and Benue states affected later in the day. The South will experience thunderstorms over parts of Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Ondo, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states during the morning hours. Later in the day, thunderstorms will affect Enugu, Ondo, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Oyo, Edo, Ogun, Osun, Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Delta states.

For Friday and Saturday, NiMet predicts thunderstorms over Taraba and Adamawa states in the morning, with Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto states affected in the afternoon and evening. The South will see thunderstorms over Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, and Delta states in the morning, spreading to Oyo, Ogun, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Delta, and Cross River states later in the day. On Sunday, thunderstorms are predicted over parts of Taraba State in the morning, with Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, and Jigawa states affected later in the day.

NiMet has warned residents to avoid flood-prone areas due to the high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities resulting from heavy downpours. The agency also advised the public to take necessary precautions, as strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are expected. Relevant authorities have been urged to adhere to safety advisories issued by NiMet to ensure public safety.
