Nigerians More Religious than Godly, Says Prof. Ishaq Oloyede

In a thought-provoking lecture titled “Duties of Muslim Citizens in National Development,” Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), highlighted the distinction between religiousness and godliness among Nigerians. He emphasized that while Nigerians exhibit religious fervor, they often fall short in embodying godly virtues.

Speaking at the First Aare Sulaiman Afolabi Ogunlayi Ramadan Lecture organized by House of Representatives member Akin Rotimi in Ikole Ekiti, Ekiti State, Prof. Oloyede underscored the need for Nigerians to combine religious devotion with hard work to achieve tangible results. He lamented that excessive reliance on prayers without corresponding effort is a significant challenge facing the nation.

According to Prof. Oloyede, Nigeria is abundantly endowed with natural resources, including vast arable land and favorable climatic conditions for agriculture. He urged Nigerians to harness these resources effectively, emphasizing the importance of unity and diligence in national development efforts.

While acknowledging the positive impact of religion on socio-economic development, Prof. Oloyede called for greater unity and collaboration across ethnic and religious lines to address the nation’s challenges comprehensively. He emphasized the need to overcome ethnic divisions and leverage religion as a unifying force for progress.

In recognition of his contributions to religious and political development in the state and country, Prof. Oloyede praised Akin Rotimi for organizing the lecture to honor Aare Sulaiman Afolabi Ogunlayi, the National Vice President of Ansar-ur-Deen Society of Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of celebrating patriotic citizens during their lifetime, highlighting the significance of acknowledging their efforts while they are still alive.

In response, Aare Sulaiman Afolabi Ogunlayi expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the rarity of being honored while still alive.
