NFF appoints Finidi George as new Super Eagles head coach to replace Jose Peseiro
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Ajax Amsterdam player George Finidi as the new coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, thus replacing Jose Peseiro.
The appointment of Finidi was confirmed by the board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee.
During two friendlies in Morocco last month, the former international, who served as coach José Santos Peseiro’s assistant for 20 months before the Portuguese man resigned the position voluntarily after Cote d’Ivoire 2023 finished second in the Africa Cup of Nations, led the team in an acting capacity.
His team ended an 18-year losing run against the Black Stars by defeating Ghana 2-1 in the opening game, but they were defeated 0-2 by Mali in the second encounter.
In just over five weeks, Finidi’s first assignment will be to lead the Super Eagles to success in their two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan, respectively.
The Super Eagles, who are now third in Group C of the African campaign, are behind South Africa and Rwanda. The team is now condemned to win both games.
