Free agent Mats Hummels says goodbye to Borussia Dortmund after 13-years
Veteran German international defender Mats Hummels has said goodbye to Borussia Dortmund after spending no fewer than 13 seasons for the top-flight German club.
The departure of the 35-year-old defender was announced by the club on Friday a day after the German club announced that coach Edin Terzic had resigned from his post.
In his message to his fans, Hummels who won the World Cup for Germany in 2014 said that it has been a huge honour to play for Dortmund after more than 13 years.
“Dear fans, my time in black and yellow is now coming to an end after more than 13 years. It has been a huge honour and pleasure for me to have played for BVB for so long and to have been part of the journey from 13th place in January 2008.
“The countless great coaches and fantastic players I have had the honour of meeting here. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you all meet up again at Borsigplatz as soon as possible to celebrate.
“I will miss you”. Hummels who helped Dortmund reach the final of the Champions League this season.
This comes after Dortmund confirmed the appointment of club legend Nuri Sahin as the club’s new manager to replace departed manager Edin Terzic.
Dortmund in a post shared on its official X handle (formerly Twitter) informed that Terzic had departed the club for pastures anew after he requested to step down from his job.
“Edin Terzić leaves Borussia Dortmund,” Dortmund wrote on its official X handle.
“The coach, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished runner-up in the 2023 championship, and reached the 2024 Champions League final, asked BVB to terminate his contract with immediate effect.
“Borussia Dortmund agreed to the request after a joint discussion.” The club noted in its post on X.
