Finidi George pens deal to become new Rivers United coach after quitting Super Eagles role

Former Nigerian football international Finidi George has signed the dotted lines to become the new coach of NPFL side Rivers United after quitting his role as Super Eagles coach.

Finidi, who racked up 62 caps during his time with the Super Eagles, says his first goal is to assist Rivers United in earning a continental ticket from the domestic league for the upcoming season.

The 53-year-old, who quit the national squad last month, has now agreed to a two-year deal in principle with the former winners of the Nigerian football championship.

“I am honoured to have this opportunity, and I thank the Sports Commissioner, the General Manager, and the supporters for their confidence in me. I am committed to working hard and making the team win,” Finidi said at the contract signing ceremony.

“The target set is to win games and at least finish on the continent next season.”

While explaining the reason for hiring Finidi, Rivers United in a post shared on iX informed that the coach was employed because he has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success.

“Finidi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team, having had a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years,” reads a statement on the club’s X account.

“As a coach, Finidi has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success, and we are confident that he will bring his expertise and passion to our club. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to a successful tenure under his leadership.” The message shared on X was read in full.
