Babcock University Lecturer Shot Dead at Relaxation Centre; Police, Ogun Government on Trail of Killers

Tragedy struck at Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, as Professor Yinka Olowojobi, a lecturer at the institution, was shot dead at a relaxation centre in Iperu.

The incident, which occurred last Friday around 9:20 p.m., saw gunmen invade the Ajadeh Event Centre on Sagamu Road, Iperu, where they opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in the death of Professor Olowojobi and the abduction of two others.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, stated that Olowojobi was among three individuals shot by the assailants. She disclosed that the lecturer was rushed to Babcock University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. According to Odutola, the attackers, numbering about eight and clad in black attire, forcefully stormed the relaxation lounge and unleashed terror on the unsuspecting victims.

Detailing the events leading up to the tragic incident, Odutola mentioned that Professor Olowojobi was shot in the chest after he refused to comply with the assailants’ demands. Additionally, a car stand manager known as Dare, and another individual whose identity remains undisclosed, were abducted during the attack.

In response to the heinous crime, the police swiftly apprehended one Awada Ishaya from Plateau State, who had recently been employed as a security guard at the event centre. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with efforts focused on apprehending the perpetrators and securing the safe release of the kidnapped victims.

Expressing shock and sorrow over the loss, Babcock University issued a statement through Dr. Joshua Suleiman, the Director of Communication and Marketing. The university community mourned the untimely demise of Professor Olowojobi, describing him as a dedicated educator who made significant contributions to the institution.

Highlighting Professor Olowojobi’s academic credentials and tenure at Babcock University, the statement emphasized his commitment to imparting knowledge and nurturing young minds. The university extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students, pledging support and prayers during this difficult time.
