Former international football player Austin ‘Cerezo’ Eguavoen has reacted to reports making the rounds that he has stepped down as coach of the Super Eagles following the team’s barren draw against Rwanda in the ongoing 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Following the Super Eagles’ 0-0 draw with Rwanda on Tuesday, there were allegations a day after the game that the 59-year-old had resigned from his post as coach after fulfilling the two-match mandate handed to him by the Nigeria Football Federation.
However, Eguavoen has refuted the claim while speaking with the Nigerian media; whatever reports out claiming he has stepped down as Super Eagles coach is not correct.
Eguavoen stated that he is still in charge of the team but he also noted that it is quite unfortunate that people trigger what is not correct as the team does not write negative stories at this time.
“Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, I am still in charge,” Eguavoen clarified on arrival in Nigeria from the match in Rwanda.
“I am the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles at this moment and that is where we are.
“I only said that I am going to sit down with the hierarchy of the federation after these two games and see how we prosecute the next games.
“It’s quite unfortunate that people trigger what is not correct and in the situation we’re in we don’t need negative stories.”
