Activists Demand Independent Leadership for Nigerian Oil Sector Amid Fuel Scandal

In response to growing concerns over the importation of adulterated fuel into Nigeria, the Citizens and Economic Freedom Rights Activists in Nigeria (CEFRAN) have urged the government to establish independent leadership for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other key oil and gas agencies.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Obinna Francis, the Convener of CEFRAN, expressed outrage over the continued importation and distribution of substandard fuel, describing it as a severe threat to public health. He lamented that Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest oil producer, is forced to import low-quality fuel from countries like Malta, which lacks its own refining capacity.

“It is deeply troubling that Nigeria, a major oil producer, has become reliant on importing substandard petrol, especially from a country like Malta, which doesn’t even have indigenous refineries,” Francis stated. He further criticized the practice of blending inferior fuel in Malta before its export to Nigeria, labeling it as an illegal and hazardous operation that compromises the safety and health of millions.

Francis noted, “The actions of these traders, who have allegedly set up blending facilities in Malta, have compromised the quality of fuel supplied to Nigerians. This is not just a violation of industry standards but a blatant disregard for the safety and welfare of our people.” He emphasized that such practices undermine the government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies, which many now view as ineffective in addressing the sector’s underlying issues.

CEFRAN has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint an independent management team to oversee the NNPCL, urging the need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the ongoing fuel scandal. The group insists that this new leadership must be unconnected to the current administration, which they believe has failed to protect the interests of the Nigerian populace.

“The need for an independent investigation cannot be overstated,” the group urged. “We must ensure that those responsible for these harmful practices are held accountable. The Nigerian people deserve a fuel supply system that is transparent, reliable, and free from the influence of corrupt individuals.”

In addition to their demands for new leadership, CEFRAN advocates for stricter regulations and enforcement measures to guarantee the quality of fuel being imported into Nigeria. The group is also rallying the public to join their cause, emphasizing that the time has come to liberate the nation from the grip of those prioritizing profits over the welfare of citizens.

As the scandal unfolds, CEFRAN’s call for independent leadership and a thorough investigation has resonated with many Nigerians who are increasingly frustrated with the state of the country’s oil and gas sector.
