The Nasarawa State Government has announced its plan to develop an action plan that puts women at the forefront of its campaign against the effects of climate change.
This initiative aims to address the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and their families.
The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Aisha Rufa’i Ibrahim, made this known at a press conference in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State. According to Ibrahim, the campaign will focus on activities that exacerbate climate change and its consequences on the people.
Ibrahim emphasized that the impacts of climate change, such as extreme heat, unpredictable weather conditions, and floods, pose a significant threat to the unity and economic stability of families. She called for collective action against the phenomenon, highlighting the critical role women can play in mitigating its effects.
Given their resilient disposition, dedication, and commitment to a cause, women are well-positioned to take the lead in addressing climate change. The Commissioner urged women to take an active role in promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the impact of climate change on their communities.
On a separate note, the Commissioner expressed concern about the negative impact of social media on children. She appealed to parents to monitor their children’s social media use and curtail the increasing rate of social vices resulting from its use.
The Commissioner noted that social media has exposed children to various influences and abuses, and called for regulation on the type of content consumed by children. She emphasized that children no longer need to leave their homes to engage in unlawful activities, as social media has made it possible for them to do so from the comfort of their own homes.
Ibrahim urged parents to also monitor the company their children keep, as this can significantly reduce their exposure to societal ills. By taking these steps, parents can help protect their children from the negative impacts of social media and promote a safer, more sustainable environment for them to grow and thrive.
