Todd Boehly defends Chelsea’s spending spree after shelling out over £1 billion since taking over
American businessman and investor Todd Boehly has defended Chelsea’s spending spree after shelling out over £1 billion as Blues boss since he took over at Stamford Bridge.
Since Boehly took management in 2022, Chelsea has invested a total of €1.0802 billion (€1,080.2 million) in transactions. Raheem Sterling was his first big acquisition at Stamford Bridge once he became the owner.
After spending a trophy-filled stint at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, the Englishman signed a €56.2 million deal to join Chelsea from the Etihad Stadium.
The likes of Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Moises Caicedo were also snapped up from different clubs, with Boehly insisting that they are investing in young talent.
The businessman also reiterated this stance at the recently stated Qatar Economic Forum, where he insisted that Chelsea are not on a spending spree, rather they are investing the money.
“We are not spending the money; we are investing the money.”
“When we are spending, we are investing and those players continue to hold their value”.
“I argue the investments made at Chelsea have held their value”, Boehly said via @QatarEconForum
While commenting on Chelsea’s project, Boehly said fans and critics of the club have to be patient because the club has been the fourth-best team in the Premier League since Boxing Day.
He said; “We’ve got to be patient”.
“Since Boxing Day, we are the fourth-best team in the Premier League. When you look at what is going on now, it feels better and better”, Boehly told @QatarEconForum
