IGP Egbetokun Charges Police Legal Officers to Uphold Rule of Law, Protect Citizens’ Rights

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights in all policing operations.
During a meeting with police legal officers at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the IGP stressed the critical role of legal prosecutors and advisors in ensuring adherence to legal procedures, ethical standards, and human rights principles.
The IGP highlighted the need for continuous training and capacity-building initiatives to enhance the legal proficiency of police personnel across all levels. He emphasized the importance of nurturing a system of professionalism, accountability, and transparency within the Nigeria Police Force, aligning police actions with constitutional provisions, statutory regulations, and international conventions to maintain public trust and confidence.
The IGP urged all police legal officers to remain vigilant in safeguarding citizens’ rights and ensuring due process in all aspects of policing activities.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration between legal advisors and operational units to achieve operational effectiveness while respecting human rights and the rule of law.
