Torrent, Amuneke, in two-way horse race to become new Super Eagles coach —Report
Seasoned Spanish coach Domenec Torrent, one of Pep Guardiola’s longest-serving assistants and ex-Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke are reportedly in a two-horse race to become the next coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The pair, according to a report published on Tuesday by Complete Sports.com, are the leading contenders in contention to occupy the role of new Super Eagles coach, which became vacant following the departure of Jose Peseiro.
The report states that Torrent is the number one candidate among the foreign coaches who applied for the job, but Amuneke is the obvious choice among local coaches if the NFF chooses to settle for a Nigerian as the new coach of the Super Eagles.
Torrent has coached teams like Galatasaray, Flamengo, and New York City, and has even turned down the chance to coach Cameroon in favour of managing Nigeria.
A top representative of Torrent told SCORENigeria that Cameroon offered him a favourable offer, but the coach believes that Nigeria is the best option for him at the moment.
He has worked closely with Guardiola at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, where they won significant championships such as the Bundeliga, La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League.
Amuneke, who entered the contest to lead the Nigerian Super Eagles as their new manager as early as March, led the country’s U-17 squad, the Golden Eaglets, to the 2015 Junior World Cup victory.
The 53-year-old former Tanzanian national team manager also earned 27 caps and scored nine goals during his time with Nigeria’s senior national team.
