FG Urges Compliance with EFCC’s Invitations to Uphold Rule of Law

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has expressed concern over the hindrance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from executing its constitutional duties. Fagbemi emphasized that the EFCC possesses the authority to summon individuals during investigations, regardless of their status.

Following the failed attempt by the EFCC to arrest former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, despite obtaining a court order, Fagbemi underscored the importance of public officials refraining from obstructing the EFCC’s statutory obligations. While not explicitly mentioning Bello, Fagbemi urged all summoned individuals to comply with the EFCC’s invitations, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law and honorably respond to such calls.

In a statement, Fagbemi affirmed his commitment to safeguarding the fundamental human rights of citizens and promised to hold any law enforcement agency accountable for any violation. He urged Nigerians to trust in the country’s judicial system and advised those invited by the EFCC to prioritize decency and civility by honoring the invitations, rather than resorting to self-help or evasion tactics.
