Meanwhile, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the state government to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat drug abuse. The resolution was sponsored by the Assembly Majority Leader, Sheriff Yusuf, who emphasized the alarming rise in drug abuse among youth and adults in the state.
Yusuf noted that drug abuse has severe social, economic, and health consequences, including increased crime rates and mental health challenges. He explained that the Assembly recognized the need for a robust and concerted response to address the scourge of drug addiction.
“It has been observed that secondary schools, motor parks, garages, and even communities across Ogun State have become hotbeds of drug-related activities, putting the younger generation and the vulnerable population at risk,” Yusuf said. “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other relevant authorities have continued to release troubling statistics on the prevalence of drug abuse in Ogun State, signalling an urgent need for a robust and concerted response.”
Other lawmakers, including Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, Honourables Adegoke Adeyanju, Adebisi Oyedele, and Yusuf Amosun, corroborated Yusuf’s concerns about the high rate of drug abuse and trafficking in the state. They urged the state government to collaborate with relevant agencies to raid hotels and nightclubs where drug abuse is prevalent.
