Varsity Don Harps on Need to Make Agricultural Science Compulsory For Students
Professor Remigius Oyebode Famiwole, a university lecturer, has called on the government to make Agricultural Science compulsory for all junior class students and science students in public and private secondary schools in Nigeria.
He made this submission during the 85th inaugural lecture at Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, titled ‘Dynamics of Agricultural Science And Agricultural Education Pedagogies: The Missing Link Leverage’.
“The old farmers are now getting older and dying off. There have never been enough youths in Agriculture who are willing or skilled to go into production agriculture or agric-partnership to replace those who are leaving the world of agriculture,” Famiwole said.
He emphasized that only trained and professional teachers of Agriculture should be allowed to teach the subject in secondary schools.
Famiwole also recommended periodic evaluation of school farm activities and funding support from PTAs, philanthropists, and successful agro-based businessmen.
EKSU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Edward Olanipekun, appreciated the lecturer’s impactful thesis, saying, “It’s high time we all embrace Agriculture… I appreciate the lecturer, he has paid the price, it’s left for others to do the needful on impactful lectures.”
