Nigerian Government Clarifies Allowance Adjustments for Foreign Scholars

In a recent meeting with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Abuja, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman addressed concerns regarding reports of reduced allowances for scholarship students abroad.

The Federal Government has denied slashing allowances, attributing adjustments to foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

Mamman explained that the reported reductions under the Bilateral Educational Agreement Scholarship (BEA) were misinterpreted, emphasizing that the government has not decreased the students’ allowances. He stated, “Adjustments were made due to FOREX fluctuations, and once additional funds are secured, the scholars will receive their full allowances.”

The Minister reassured that the government has no intention of reducing the students’ allowances and is working to secure additional funds to cover the shortfalls. The Federal Scholarship Board had announced adjustments to allowances for students stranded in countries such as Russia, Morocco, and Algeria, citing economic challenges.
