Carlo Ancelotti explains why Real Madrid did not sign Victor Osimhen last season
Italian professional football coach Carlo Ancelotti has explained why Spanish La Liga side Real Madrid decided not to sign Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen last season.
Ancelotti who was speaking with Radio TV Serie A recently said that Real Madrid decided not to sign Osimhen despite the departure of Karim Benzema because they had an alternative.
According to him, Madrid decided against acquiring the services of Osimhen because they thought that Benzema’s departure could be remedied by purchasing Jude Bellingham.
“No (we didn’t sign Osimhen) because I think the club thought that Benzema’s absence could be remedied by purchasing (Jude) Bellingham,” Ancelotti said in the chat.
The comments of the coach come after Napoli once again lowered the asking price for Osimhen due to a lack of suitors from clubs in Europe and beyond.
Osimhen has been Napoli’s best scorer for the last two seasons, including the Scudetto-winning 2022–23 campaign, but Napoli is ready to cash in on him this summer.
The 25-year-old signed a new contract with Napoli in December that will expire in the summer of 2026. The release clause is thought to be worth between €120 million and €130 million.
Napoli has been expecting bids from teams like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain, but no formal proposals have been made as of yet, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
