Ex-Real Madrid midfielder Mutiu Adepoju denies applying for vacant Super Eagles job
Former Super Eagles and Real Madrid midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has denied applying for the job of the senior national team of Nigeria as widely reported in the media.
Mutiu was quoted to be interested in the Super Eagles job as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues its search for a coach for the team following the resignation of George Finidi.
“We had several players in the Castilla team who are brilliant coaches today, and we didn’t see it at the time. I have a UEFA Pro license myself, so if there’s an opportunity, I wouldn’t mind,” he told the Managing Madrid Podcast.
“I’m open. I once coached Shooting Stars in Nigeria, but I haven’t coached since then.” Mutiu added in the podcast.
However, the former player who holds a UEFA Pro coaching license has told those who care to listen that he never applied for the Super Eagles job as widely reported.
Adepoju declared in an interview with Nigeria Info FM Abuja that he will only back calls for an Indigenous coach to lead the Super Eagles and that he has no plans to take on the role.
He said; “I never spoke about the Super Eagles’ appointment. I never applied, and I am sure the NFF did not mention my name.
“I already supported calls for an Indigenous coach for the job. I was happy to hear that Amokachi, Finidi, and Amuneke applied. The NFF then announced their choice.
“Will I then go behind them and apply in secret?” Adepoju, who is now an ambassador of the Spanish Liga in Nigeria, pondered.
“I was just looking at my time in Spain, with Castella and Real Madrid.
“I spoke about it on my X handle. It was just about how I got to Spain, but nothing about the Super Eagles. I don’t know where they got their story from.”
